DIY Thieves Hand Sanitizer
There are times, when coming into limited contact with germs is a good thing for our bodies. Those germs allow our bodies the opportunity to build strong immune systems, but there are always those occasions when you are so, so thankful for a little bottle of hand sanitizer. Lately I feel as though every time I turn on the news, it is telling me about the flu epidemic in our state. It has made me into a little bit of a germ-a-phobe.
This past Sunday there was a man sitting in front of us who was clearly suffering. Part of me really felt bad for him, but then the germ-a-phobe part of me was using my Bible as a mask and was thinking of anointing his head with oil. (Is that wrong??) As soon as church was over the sweet man that he is, reached behind him to meet and greet those that were sitting around him. Eeeeekkkkkk!!!! Since I couldn’t run away fast enough, I shook his hand. Never, ever have I been so glad to see my sanitizer, not just any sanitizer, but my homemade thieves sanitizer.
This homemade hand sanitizer is never far from my person.
It is the ingredients that makes this sanitizer so amazing. Let’s chat about them.
Witch Hazel acts as the antiseptic in this mix. It works to disrupt the cell membrane of bacteria from the surface of your hand. Thanks to the fact that witch hazel doesn’t contain the strong concentration of alcohol, it won’t sting or dry out your hands like some store bought sanitizers can.
Aloe Vera Gel is the next ingredient on the list. Aloe also contains its own anti fungal and antibacterial properties in a moisturizing, gentle way. It is important to use the clear, unscented aloe for this recipe.
The final touch that makes up our strong and effective sanitizer, are the oils we add into it. My go-to oil for our sanitizer is Thieves Essential Oil. The way I see it, if Thieves was strong enough to keep the plague away from the crypt thieves who first used it, then it is what I want in my corner. (To read more about the background of Thieves read here.)
Vitamin E oil and water are the last two ingredients used. They work together to thin the consistency of the sanitizer and help it spread more thoroughly on your hands.
Making your own hand sanitizer is simplistically easy. Combine all of the ingredients together in a 3 oz. flip top travel size bottle. Once your mixture is assembled, secure the lid and shake to incorporate all the ingredients.
