Spotlight Oil: Ylang Ylang
THE BACKGROUND OF YLANG YLANG:
Ylang Ylang is sourced from star shaped flowers found in the Philippines, Indonesia, and throughout parts of Asia. Known to locals as the”flowers of flowers”; this very special plant is an important part of local culture. The Indonesian people spread the Ylang Ylang flowers over the marriage beds of newlyweds, due to it’s energizing and aphrodisiac qualities. The ladies in the Philippines will string the flowers together to wear as necklaces. In Malaysia, you would find these flowers strewn in the grasses at night, because it is believed to provide a relaxing sleep atmosphere. If you were to travel to Madagascar, you could try their most popular ice cream flavor, Ylang Ylang.
The rich, floral aroma of Ylang Ylang makes it a perfect addition to fragrances. Ever heard of Chanel #5? This popular perfume owes a big part of its signature scent to Ylang Ylang.
THE USES FOR YLANG YLANG:
- This oil is a huge support for the circulatory system, especially if combined with Lavender or Frankincense.
- Diffusing Ylang Ylang is a sure way to enhance your mood. This oil is a great support for those who are stressed, anxious, tense, or depressed.
- As mentioned above Ylang Ylang has been used for many years to boost the libido. Stress and hormones are known to slow sex drives to a crawl. Ylang Ylang has been used for years in the aromatherapy circles to give those drives a kick. If you really want to throw your libido into a frenzy blend Ylang Ylang with some Sandalwood. (you can thank me later for that tip!)
- This is a great oil to add to your skin care arsenal. Ylang Ylang is a great assistant to use to keep your face moisturized and clear.
HOW TO USE YLANG YLANG:
There are two main ways to use Ylang Ylang.
- Diffuse up to 10 minutes, 3 times a day.
- Apply 2-3 drops topically. This oil does not typically require dilution.
BLENDS WELL WITH:
Bergamot, chamomile, clary sage, lavender, clove, eucalyptus, lemon, ginger, grapefruit, jasmine, neroli, orange, patchouli, rose, sandalwood, or vetiver.
(My personal favorite Ylang Ylang blend is: 3 Drops Lavender, 2 Drops Ylang Ylang, and 2 Drops Orange. Pure magic)
Oil Specific: A little of this oil goes a long way; start with a small amount. Avoid while pregnant. Use sparingly if you struggle with low blood pressure.
General: As with all essential oils, never use them undiluted, in eyes or mucus membranes. If taking internally, be sure that your oil is marked for ingestion and that it is 100% pure. Keep away from children. If applying an essential oil to your skin always perform a small patch test to an insensitive part of the body (after you have properly diluted the oil in an appropriate carrier.
