A little while ago on the blog, I shared the story of how our family began a quest to eliminate as much waste from our budget (or as much as a family of 5 possibly could). We analyzed a number of items that we purchased regularly and worked to find cheaper substitutions or find ways to recreate those items ourselves.
Obviously there were a great many things that were impossible for us to do ourselves. However, surprisingly, there were a great many that we were able to eliminate purchasing. Thankfully a moisturizing body cream that the whole family loves was one we have been able to make ourselves.
Moisturizing body cream is used by every member of our family. Each of us struggle with dry skin throughout the year. It might not have been so bad if we all used the same cream, but that wasn’t the case.
Each of us was partial to certain scents, some wanted sweet and flowery and others wanted rugged and manly. The cost for purchasing 5 different types of cream on a pretty regular basis was adding up.
To the internet I went in search of an acceptable alternative. (Don’t you just love the internet? I sometimes wonder how we did life without it!) In my research, I was able to find many recipes for creating everything from lotions to shaving cream. This absolutely delighted me! Not only would we be able to save money on the lotions, but I would be able to know exactly what was in them and customize to each family members wishes.
The other significant thing that added to my excitement, was the fact that it took little effort to make and most of the ingredients were already in my house. Today, I am going to walk you through step by step so that you can create your own personalized body butter.
The only ingredient that I didn’t have on hand was Shea Butter, but Amazon came to my rescue. The universal store where you can find everything and anything! Once I received the Shea, I was ready to get started. Here is the recipe for you to create a fabulous body butter.
Whipped Body Butter
1 Cup Shea Butter
1/2 Cup Coconut Oil
1/2 Cup Almond Oil
1 tsp. Vitamin E Oil
1 tsp. Corn Starch
50 Drops of Your Choice Essential Oil (We used 40 drops Stress Away and 10 Drops Orange)
Begin with a pot, filled with about 2 inches of water. Place a glass bowl down into the pot to create a double boiler. Add the Shea Butter and coconut oil to the double boiler and melt down until you have a smooth, amber liquid.
Once your oils have liquified, take your bowl off the pan, and let cool for 25 minutes. After you have cooled your liquid, add almond oil, Vitamin E oil, Corn Starch, and essential oils.
Whisk all ingredients together to once again smooth the liquid out. Place in the refrigerator until the oil has once again become a solid.
Once the oil has become a solid again, you are ready to whip. Scoop out the oil into your mixing bowl, fitted with the whisk attachment and whip until your mixture has turned white and is the consistency of a beautiful whipped cream.
