Perfect Freeze Packing Strawberries

There is nothing quite like fresh fruit right off the tree or the vine.  Pick Strawberries Day (May 20) seems like the perfect excuse to indulge in that particular pleasure.  We are at the height of strawberry season and this is a great time to get out there and stock your freezer full of these delicious berries.

Strawberry picking

This past weekend we had a gorgeous Saturday to play with, so off to the strawberry patch we went.  The kids had a blast trying to best each other with who could fill their baskets first and who could pick the prettiest strawberry.

Mom was just excited that we were bringing home loads of berries that would make perfect pies, sauces, and smoothies.

Freezing berries is so incredibly easy and a fantastic money saver.  Today I am going to share three different ways that you can preserve your berries for year long enjoyment.  (If they last that long in your house)

No matter which one of the methods you choose, you will always begin with the same two steps; wash and remove the head of the berry.

Freezing Methods

Place cleaned, dry berries in a single layer on a cookie sheet.  Place uncovered in the freezer for 30 minutes.  At the end of 30 minutes remove berries from the tray and place into an airtight freezer container or into freezer bags.

Dry Sugar Pack

Slice cleaned berries.  Add ½ Cup Sugar to 1 Quart berries and toss carefully.  Pack berries into an airtight container or into freezer bags.

Syrup Pack

For this method, you can use either sliced or whole berries.  In a small sauce pan, combine 1 cup of water to 1 cup of sugar.  Heat until liquid is translucent and sugar has dissolved.  Let liquid cool.  Once liquid has cooled stir into 1 quart of strawberries.  Transfer into an airtight freezer container or into freezer bags.

Pick one of these quick and easy storage methods the next time you see berries on sale at the market or after you go strawberry picking.
