Spotlight Oil: Copaiba

Spotlight Oil: Copaiba (Pronounced Ko-pah-eee-bah)

From it’s difficult to pronounce name to it’s somewhat bland colored label, this oil is often the most overlooked oil in the Premium Starter Kit.  However, if you knew how much this little bottle could help you, you might be running to it straight away.  Let’s take a look at Copaiba.

copaiba trees

It is harvested in much the same way we tap maple trees.  The resin is taken right out of the tree through a tapped pipe that has been drilled into the tree.  Copaiba essential oil is a product of steam distilling the gum resin that has been produced from the tapped tree.

In the Amazon, healers would use Copaiba for all types of pain and disorders.  Doctors in Peru mix it with honey and give it to their patients to take internally.  Through the years, this resin has helped people find relief for all manner of issues, not the least of them being for inflammation and digestive relief.  Possibly because Copaiba contains such a high level of Beta-caryophyllene.  Beta-caryophyllene’s have been studied extensively and have shown the ability to moderate the body’s responses to irritation.  Copaiba contains 55% of these beta-caryophyllene’s, towering above Clove and Helichrysum, which have 12%.

Copaiba is also known as a driver, meaning that when you use it with another essential oil, it can have the effect of magnifying that oil.  It’s like a turbo charge for your oils.  (It boggles the mind)

Topical: Apply 2-4 drops directly to desired area. Dilution not required, except for the most sensitive skin. Use as needed.
Aromatic: Diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily.
Internally: Put 2 drops in a capsule. Take 3 times daily or as needed.  You can also try adding a drop or two of Copaiba Vitality to your herbal tea, such as chamomile, to enjoy its complex flavor.

This oil blends well with all oils to act as a driver.  If you are looking for a scent companion for a blend, take a look at Cedarwood, Citrus oils, Clary Sage, and Ylang Ylang

CAUTIONS: If you are pregnant or nursing, be sure to consult a physician.

Teething Blends:  Copaiba is great for teething babies.  Mix a drop of Copaiba with 2 drops of Coconut oil and rub on babies gums.  Repeat every few hours as needed.  If you are hesitant to place the oil inside babies mouth, you could rub the oil along babies jaw line.  (I only recommend ingesting pure, therapeutic oils like Young Living Essential Oils)

My Magic Pill:  If you have followed this blog for any length of time, you may know that in December I took a nasty fall that resulted in a concussion and a fractured vertebrae near the base of my spine.  The doctor put me on a pill for pain and one to relax the muscles.  These medications made me feel terrible and were chewing up my stomach.  A friend recommended that I try a special essential oil blend that is affectionately known as a “morphine bomb” around the inter web.  I tried it and was incredibly surprised at it’s effectiveness to help me manage my discomfort.  I cannot tell you how this will work for you, but I can tell you that for me it was a total game changer.  Gone went the prescriptive’s.  This made me deliriously happy to be able to manage my pain and not have to tear a whole in my stomach at the same time or worry about addictions because of long term use.  Upon the request of my doctor, I have now changed the name of this blend to my “magic bullet”.  (If you want to see a great face, tell your doctor that you are taking a “morphine bomb” and that you are making it from a recipe that you found on the internet.)  My doctor was incredibly pleased with my results and encouraged me to keep doing what I was doing for as long as it was working for me.
