Spotlight Oil: Oregano

Background of Oregano:

Known as mountain joy, Oregano has been around for centuries and was commonly used by the ancient Greeks and Romans.  The name came from the Greeks, oros- meaning mountain and ganos- which means joy.
This oil is a member of the mint family and is native to areas of western Asia and the Mediterranean, where it was used for its health benefits as well as in cooking.
Throughout history, many people experimented with Oregano.  The ancient Greeks were the first to recognize its great health benefits and used it for everything from convulsions to headaches. Hippocrates, a famous Greek physician, wrote in extensive detail about oregano oils curing certain ailments.  Apicius was a famous Roman chief and he decided to use oregano in his version of pizza. (and aren’t we so glad he did?) Nowadays, Oregano is said to be one of the most diverse health aides available.
A recent search through the website revealed over 1,200 studies that have been done on carvacrol, which is a phenol (chemical compound) found in oregano that works in an interesting way against bacteria. Carvacrol breaks through the outer cell membrane that protects bacteria from being discovered by the immune system. This then allows the immune system to detect and destroy invading bacteria.  (I’m not a science nerd, but even I know that is super cool!)

Uses for Oregano:

  • Helps with feelings of security
  • Supports the appearance of healthy skin
  • Add 10 drops of oregano and 10 drops of lemon essential oils to a spray bottle full of water for a non-toxic all-purpose cleaning spray.
  • Put one to two drops in an empty supplement capsule to help support healthy respiratory function. (Check out our immune boosting bomb recipe in the DIY to Try section)
  • Take one drop daily to maintain healthy immune function
  • Used as a powerful cleansing and purifying agent
  • Excellent source of antioxidants
  • Add one drop in place of one tablespoon ground oregano to your favorite Italian dishes

How to use:

  • Topically: Dilute with V-6 oil or a carrier oil of your choice. Test on small area of skin on the underside of arm and apply to desired area as needed.  Oregano is a HOT oil.   If your skin ever feels uncomfortable while you are using this oil; add more carrier oil to your dilution ratio.  I also highly recommend adding oregano to your nightly oil routine.  During the months of the year when illnesses are on the rise, add a few drops of oregano to the bottom of the feet to help support a strong healthy immune system.  (I usually mix mine with Thieves for added support.)
  • Aromatically:  This scent is herbaceous and a great choice for purifying the air.  Use some of our scent companions from the “blends well with” section below.
  • Ingestion:  What is Italian food without the addition of oregano?  Use Oregano Vitality to add zest and zing to your favorite dishes.  You can also choose to use this as part of your daily wellness routine to support healthy immune function.

Blends well with:

Basil, Fennel, Geranium, Lemongrass, Myrtle, Pine, Rosemary and Thyme.
